1- Don’t ignore your loading dock!
Your overall warehouse can not be safe without your loading dock being safe and up to code. Keep the area clean, lit, and well maintained.
It is especially important to chock your wheels. They are often forgotten when outfitting a loading dock. Wheel chocks prevent accidents that can happen from a semi-trailer or truck moving from a stationary position. Chain, hanger, and reflect are often also used with wheel chocks.
2- Get Ergonomic
Proper ergonomics increases worker productivity and decreases overall injury. Different ergonomic fixes include making sure desks are at a proper working height, using anti-fatigue mats, and not bending over to reach boxes.
3-Use the Right Tool for the Right Job
Always use the right tool for the right job! Cutting corners can lead to very serious injuries. For example, when you are looking to reach an item on the top shelf of a shelving unit, do not climb the shelving! Instead, grab a safety ladder and retrieve your item.
4-Don't overload your shelves
Speaking of shelving, be sure to pay attention to capacity limits. When a shelf is overloaded, it can collapse and lead to very serious or even fatal injury. To see if a shelf is being overloaded, check for sagging and damage to walls. Be sure to also properly install your shelving unit.
5-Safety Gates
A gate serves as a great warning. They let everyone know where they shouldn’t be! They also protect employees and equipment. Mezzanine gates and dock safety gates are often used in the warehouse.
